Meet Coach Jenny Hansen.
Owner/Head Coach of Kona Swim Lessons.
Jenny started Kona swim lessons as way to meet her own desire of placing a stamp in her community with connection, purpose, and joy. This fueled her to start this business. She has always loved teaching since her first job as a teenager teaching swim lessons to kids at her local club. Jenny grew up in a family that loved the water and the sport of swimming. A passion for the water started for her in her childhood home memories in some of the sunniest states including California, Arizona, and Hawaii. Most days you would find her sister, brother, and herself in the water. She teases that she may have learned to swim before she learned how to walk!
In Arizona, summers are pretty much unbearable because of the heat and so Jenny, like most children in Arizona, linked play time to pool time! She was comfortable with her face in the water as an infant and swimming all by myself by 3 years of age.
Jenny swam competitively off and on throughout her childhood and young adulthood. She swam primarily for the Mission Viejo Nadadores, South Coast Aquatics Swim Team, and Dolphin Aquatics Swim Team in Southern California. She coached and taught swim lessons all through high school and college in San Diego. Her junior and senior year of college she became the Head Coach for the Peninsula YMCA Swim Team and managed their swim lessons program and U.S. Master’s swim team practices.
After graduating from Point Loma Nazarene University with her Bachelor's in Business Administration. She moved back to Dana Point and worked for own family business, she then continued growing her resume by joining the Management Trainee Program at Enterprise Rent A Car and built up some more business acumen and expanded her customer service experience. Jenny moved to Kailua-Kona to be the Director of Business Development at Mokulele Airlines in 2012. The opportunity and experience let her feel the love of the islands and the wonderful people, however after five years felt the need to spread her wings. She was starting to ask herself what was her purpose? The following questions would pop in her head? “If I could do anything for a living what would I do? What is my dream job?” She felt and saw a need in the community for another swim lessons program, as Kailua-Kona is very much like Dana Point and San Clemente where she grew up. She fell in love with Kona and had no intention of leaving. She wanted to create a swim school for little keiki. She noticed that kids need to learn proper water safety at a young age. She also noticed that many friends of hers who are adults also don't know how to swim with proper form. She partnered with Kona Aquatics and eventually started Kona Swim Lessons, llc.
Coach Steve Borowski mentored Jenny and encouraged her to pursue her passion to start Kona Swim Lessons. Coach Jenny is currently working for Kona Aquatics as the Assistant Coach to the Age Group Program as well as the Assistant Coach for the Kona Aquatics Master’s Swim Program. If you know someone who needs to learn to swim for water safety, or wants to improve their stroke technique have them contact Coach Jenny. Jenny invites you to join the age group swim team or the adults Master's Swim Program (i.e. grown up swim team- being a "Master" is not necessary!) Stop by the pool and introduce yourself!
